How It Works
A welcoming place doesn’t happen by accident.
What students experience at Front Porch is beautifully simple. The work behind it is anything but. Every meal, every cup of coffee, every conversation, and every open door is made possible by a community of people choosing, together, to make this place possible.
Hospitality is our program.
Instead of filling the calendar with programs and events, we've chosen to do a few things well, all centered around creating spaces where genuine community can grow.
We serve coffee. We share meals. We create room for students to study, gather, celebrate, grieve, laugh, ask questions, and simply be together.
Because at the heart of Front Porch is a simple belief:
Every person and every moment matter.
Every person carries a story. Every student brings something uniquely valuable to this community simply by showing up. In a world that often moves too quickly to notice one another, we believe there's something deeply meaningful about slowing down long enough to acknowledge another person's humanity.
And then there are the moments.
Not just the milestone moments, but the ordinary ones. A conversation over a cup of coffee. Someone remembering your name. A shared meal after a difficult week. A quiet place to study beside friends. We believe these seemingly small moments can shape lives just as much as the big ones.
Hospitality isn't what happens around our work.

Front Porch exists because hundreds of people each play a part.
Our staff provide the day-to-day leadership and care that keeps everything running. Each quarter, hundreds of Cal Poly students volunteer behind the coffee bar, welcome guests, wash dishes, serve dinner, and help create the environment that so many students call home.
Beyond campus, local community members prepare Wednesday meals, donate resources, mentor students, and invest financially in making this place possible.
No one person creates Front Porch.
It has always been a community effort.

A Little History
Rooted in faith. Open to everyone.
Front Porch began with a simple belief: every person has inherent dignity and deserves to experience welcome, care, and community.
We are a ministry of the Presbytery of Santa Barbara and remain rooted in the Christian tradition that gave rise to Front Porch. That faith continues to shape our commitment to hospitality, dignity, and care for every person.
At the same time, our doors are open to every student regardless of background, beliefs, identity, orientation, or questions. Participation never requires agreement with a particular faith or worldview.
Our hope is simple: that every person who walks through our doors experiences genuine hospitality, meaningful relationships, and a place where they belong.
